Local Loving with Mabata Restaurant
Updated: Apr 25, 2019
Our hearts have been stolen by a new resto in Halifax called Mabata. Before we stumbled in, we did a little research. Almost every item they bring into Mabata is local! We’ve seen a few restaurants claim that their food is local but once we found ourselves immersed in Mabata, we fell instantly in love.
We went into Mabata on a quiet evening after a storm. The atmosphere was relaxing, light with a little pump of energy due to the music. The colour scheme of the dining area was a muted grey and felt very calming. We did not have to wait and suddenly, we were greeted and seated with a candle lit at our table. We had the honour to meet Najib and Alena and hear about their amazing story and love of the East Coast of Canada,
Our first treat was a small dish of day-old bread tossed in duck fast, garlic and thyme. We have to say.. we were nervous to try it at first as we usually aren’t adventurous. With the consistency of a crouton packed with tons of flavour – we were pleasantly surprised. We then tried to play it a little safe by asking for the vegetable crudites served with tahini. Although there were tons of regular veggies, like cucumber and carrots, we were surprised to find edible flowers in our veggies. They were absolutely beautiful and it was a different concept that we thought was beyond romantic. As a starter, my partner also tried to Pumpkin Croquettes. He insisted that they were absolutely lovely, the combination of flavours is unlike anywhere else.
For our first main, we tried the Acadian Sturgeon Fish Cakes. I am not a huge lover of seafood but I do love fish cakes and my partner loves seafood so it was perfect. After doing some research I found that Sturgeon can sometimes taste extremely fishy and I have to say I was nervous. My worries went out the window when they came out, toasted to perfection and tasting phenomenal. I’ve had fish cakes at so many places in my life time and I do need to point out that this was probably my favourite fish cake I have ever had the pleasure of eating.
We also tried the burger with Tatamagouche grass-fed beef (they were so kind as to split the burger in half so my partner could enjoy his with cheese). The bun itself was a brioche bun, soft and fluffy and surprisingly can not be broken apart easily which is such a great touch. I find sometimes the buns get soggy quickly or the buns break apart when you bite into them. The taste of the burger was seasoned to perfection and I have to say, it felt like a very high class burg.
All in all, I was very pleased with Mabata. I can be a picky eater, but I left Mabata feeling so refreshed, full and happy that I was able to step out of my comfort zone a tad bit. There is a story about each dish, each item and Najib and Alena truly care about their presentation and your experience.
