The Lower Deck is more than just a patio spot!

As a Haligonian, a staple to the Halifax waterfront is The Lower Deck. Weather you have listened to signal hill on a Sunday night, froze your butt off running down Lower Water Street or taken in the beauty of the harbour on a summers day – you probably have a story or two to tell. While we have a few stories of our own – including too many beer on St. Patties day we were beyond excited to try out the Brewery Market ahead of the grand reopening on March 29, 2019. The brewery market is the located second floor of the lower deck.
We stumbled in on a freezing evening to be greeted by Kelsey and Larissa – both managers and servers – and our experience began with a smile. After being seated, we were promptly given our drinks which included a Keith’s of course!
As many of you know, my Instagram is full of love of deep fried pickles. One of my beloved dishes. During happy hour (Monday to Friday from 5PM – 8PM), this is something that you can order. We started off with some delicious and crispy pickles, and opted for some chipotle mayo. The crisp and crunch did not let us down and became one of our top places for pickles in the city. The next dish on our agenda was WINGS. We ordered mild and sauced up wings. We aren’t fans of breaded wings usually because we find they are soggy most of the time. However, they were crispy, piping hot and SO DELICIOUS. As an appy person, this made my heart soar!
For our main, we tried their special which was a shawarma plate wrapped in bacon. This delicious dish came with all of the fixings, pickled veggies, tabbouleh, pita, wild rice, and two shawarma medallions wrapped in bacon. We decided to share this delightful treat and we couldn’t even eat it all. The portion sizes for every dish were unbelievably huge for the price. The only complaint was that the chicken / bacon was a little too salty but this is something that can be easily overlooked.
Our experience as a whole was amazing. Watching Kelsey and Larissa interact with other patrons was great. Each person who walked through the doors was greeted and made to feel like they were the only people there. As the night went on, the busier it got but Kelsey and Larissa worked together like a well oiled machine. I would highly recommend this place to anyone who loves good pub food at a great price.
